APQC Model

Postby Gary on Tue Jan 12, 2010 9:36 pm

I'm wondering if anyone has used the APQC model with Essential.

APQC names their levels as follows
1. Category
2. Process Group
3. Process
4. Activity

An example slice:
1 Develop Vision and Strategy (10002)
1.2 Develop business strategy (10015)
1.2.1 Develop overall mission statement (10037)
1.2.1.1 Define current business (10044)

I'm playing around trying to determine how to these levels and currently favor modeling them as different level business capabilities. I believe that a APQC level 3 "process" will actually be implemented with multiple business processes.

I'm interested in hearing opinions.

Thanks, Gary

Hi Gary.
Thanks for your post.

I personally haven't used APQC model but it should be relatively straight-forward to use the Essential constructs to support it.

One thing I have experienced a number of times and that I'd like to point out is around the process levels and our conceptual, logical, physical. Some process models I've seen use process levels to move between different levels of abstraction AND of detail (decomposition) almost interchangeably. It's important to understand the difference when you're modelling between decomposition and abstraction.
The Essential conceptual (business capabilities), logical (Business Processes), physical (Physical Business Processes) are used to capture different levels of abstraction - WHAT, HOW and WHICH/WHO/WHERE, respectively.

Decomposition is managed within the Capabilities and the logical Business Processes by providing details of what that process is composed of. e.g. for Business Process, the defining Business Process Flow enables you to capture the sub-processes that are used (flowed) to define how that process works.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on and don't hesitate to post back with any queries

Thanks
